"When are you speaking to the Haim sisters?" a text reads. "I was hoping to ask if I can become their extra sister."

There is only a single issue: I also wants to be the Haims' additional sibling. What's more, we are not alone. A host of celebrated supporters have also coveted the role.

It's clear a special quality is going on. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana launched their career doing sets at small eateries with their family. Today, they are multiple Grammy nominees.

Like all the best ensembles, they're a close trio. Their videos frequently feature them walking in sync down the streets of Los Angeles. On stage, they play with such unfettered exuberance you find yourself thinking, "I want to be involved in that, too."

"The numerous instances on tour that audience members came up to us and said, 'Watching you live, I bought a guitar'," states Alana, the most junior of the sisters. "It is the greatest honour. That's an award in itself. We've done our job if we can encourage people to start a band."

"Therefore everyone are welcome to be the honorary Haim sister."

Award Recognition

The trio are speaking from home, where they're taking a pause after an lengthy tour in support of their fourth album, I Quit.

They're right now reeling from the news it's been in the running for Best Rock Album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the first all-woman band ever in consideration for the prize.

"I watch the lists every year, so it almost feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is called," explains Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this right or am I imagining things'?"

The significance of the honor resonates with the sisters.

"We really set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a significant step," continues Alana. "Yet we're just grateful for the women that came before us."

Heartbreak and Humour

The record emerged from a period of transition. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music captures that odd transitional period where you're happy to be free, but not entirely ready to let go.

The words detail endings and farewells. The sisters seek love, but not the kind of love they've experienced. You can hear them figuring out in real life who they aspire to be.

"I love way of putting it, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a slogan. You have to consciously practice ignoring the outside opinions and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Evolution of Sound

That newfound toughness required a different sonic direction – more organic and direct than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that started with the drum sound.

"Percussion is such a nuanced thing, and I care so much about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our biography," laughs Alana. "Our motto is, our albums don't start until we find the perfect drum sound."

Anecdotes and Collective Camaraderie

The trio's honesty inspired the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters shared some of their dating misadventures.

One man left Este over a health concern. Alana told a story of travelling to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"During these setbacks, you just feel like there's only darkness," explains Alana. "Thus to be able to share those stories and hear others tell you wilder stories, it's therapeutic."

An Assured Future

You can clearly sense a change in the band. These days, Haim are more certain of their place in the rock pantheon.

They're major draws, with successful albums and an international audience.

But Haim will always be their primary priority.

"We have been performing since I was four," says Alana. "There is no other path that we were meant to do. And I'm really grateful we've gotten here and we're still kicking."
