British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a joint strike on an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory used by the IS group, according to the UK's MoD.

The site, pinpointed through surveillance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was positioned in mountains just above Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a several access tunnels providing entry to the site... initial indications indicate the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the operation late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - alternatively referred to as Daesh - imposed militant control over parts of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation demonstrates the UK's leading role, and commitment to operate in unison with allied nations, to eliminate any re-emergence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary John Healey stated.

British military aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of IS subsequent to its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank the personnel of the UK armed forces involved in this strike for their professionalism and their courage," the Defence Secretary said. "They were part of thousands of British troops deployed over the festive period. This action, to remove militants who endanger our way of life, shows how our armed forces are always on standby, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure at home and strong abroad."

During December, the American forces carried out what it termed a "large-scale strike" targeting Daesh sites in Syria, subsequent to an attack claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The UN says IS still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in both countries.
