The young democratic socialist, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first Muslim mayor. He additionally marked a milestone by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.

The new mayor also faces skepticism from some Jewish New Yorkers concerned about his past criticisms regarding Israel. Tensions were revealed during the transition when a senior aide resigned over controversial past comments.

Mamdani has sought to ease these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, preventing the appearance of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “communist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a recent encounter between the two was reportedly surprisingly friendly.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his administration's anti-crime efforts, pointing to record low numbers of homicides and gun violence in 2025, with murders recorded.

As his administration starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the historic mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual piece of advice about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”
